Justice alive and well in God's own
In November of 2004 Tim Selwyn protested against the Foreshore and Seabed Bill by smashing a window with an axe at the PM's (unoccupied) electorate office. He pleaded guilty to a charge of "conspiracy to commit criminal damage".
Mr Selwyn also left a pamphlet at the PM's office which said
"Tonight concerned Pakeha vented their anger and disgust at the Government's attempts to steal by confiscation and without consultation, Maori land in the form of the Foreshore and Seabed Bill by attacking the electorate office of the Prime Minister.
The broken glass symbolises the broken justice of this issue and we call upon other like-minded New Zealanders to commit their own acts of civil disobedience to send a clear message that such injustice can never be accepted.”
In what I can only describe as a fit of pique the Police also laid charges of "seditious conspiracy" and "making a seditious statement" relating to that pamphlet.
In June 2006 Mr Selwyn was convicted and sentenced to prison for “publishing a statement with seditious intent”.
Ah well Justice has been seen to be done hasn’t it!
Interesting to note however that the same Judge just recently sentenced a man whose street racing killed an innocent bystander to Home Detention! Yet Mr Selwyn is still in jail awaiting a court of appeal hearing. Who do you consider would be more worthy of receiving Home Detention?
Justice Delayed
IMHO Justice most certainly not seen to be done.
Imagine the public outcry if that Judge had issued a Home D sentence for that “famous” chopper builder Billy Lane in Florida.
